"Tell Me More About Vitamins, Dr Curran..."

What are vitamins and why do we need them?

Vitamins are organic molecules that your body needs to maintain its normal functions. They are vital for optimal metabolism, growth and physical wellbeing.

So where do vitamins come from?

Your body doesn't produce its own vitamins, with the notable exceptions of Vitamins D and K. The 13 vitamins essential for your body to function properly should come from your food.

I eat healthily, so I should be getting enough vitamins, right?

That may not necessarily be the case. Highly-processed foods, over-packaging and long shipping distances mean that some of our foods can lose up to 98% of their nutrients, including those all-important vitamins. And that's not the end of the problem. Modern farming practices have led to vitamin and mineral-depleted soil.

A landmark study on the topic by Donald Davis and his team of researchers from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was published in December 2004 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. They studied U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 for 43 different vegetables and fruits, finding “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C over the past half century.

OK, so I better start taking vitamin tablets, will they solve the problem?

Probably not. Most commercially-available oral supplements contain minute quantities of synthetic vitamins and minerals. The majority can be rendered useless by the digestive process. It is believed that only 15% of the active nutrients consumed orally find their way into your blood stream.

For vitamins and minerals to be absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated around the body, the digestive tract has to be healthy. But eating processed foods or having food allergies can inflame the digestive tract making it less effective at absorbing vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream.

And it gets worse. Certain foods carry high levels of 'anti-nutrients'. These are substances which actually block the the absorption of vitamins and minerals from the digestive tract!

Crikey! That's not good. So how can I improve my body's uptake of vitamins?

"Why Are Vitamin Infusions So Effective?"

Vitamin Infusions...

  • bypass the digestive system and degrading substances in the gut and allow the vitamins and minerals to flow directly into your bloodstream;
  • give direct access to your bloodstream which means that the vitamins and minerals are delivered to your cells more quickly and in higher concentrations, thereby supporting your cells to achieve optimal health;
  • deliver much higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals than is possible with tablets - for example, the anti-viral effect of Vitamin C requires 10 to 15 times the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), a level which cannot be achieved through oral supplementation;
  • can benefit most people from athletes (by supporting performance and recovery), to overworked executives and employees (by supporting a healthy immune system, maintaining healthy energy levels and supporting the body during sustained periods of increased stress), to seniors (through improved nutrient absorption which supports healthy ageing).

"What Do Your Patients Say About Your Vitamin Infusions,
Dr Curran?"

The combination of a fairly demanding job and a heavy exercise schedule have, in the past, left me run down and feeling under the weather for long periods of time - particularly over the winter months. Taking time out of work or exercise is far from ideal, so being proactive about boosting my immune system is the most sensible option for me. So far I have found vitamin infusions to be really beneficial. I have noticed an improvement in my overall energy levels as well what seems to be a greater ability to fight off the constant coughs and colds that my colleagues seem to suffer from. Dr Curran makes the whole experience very straightforward and stress free and is always happy to discuss the science behind the treatment. I would recommend this for anyone with a hectic schedule who needs help to keep going.

I recently completed the Lands End to John O’ Groats cycle ride, 'Lejog' as it is known. The ride involves cycling 969 miles in 9 days climbing around 15,000 metres in all kinds of weather. In addition to the ride, we camped at night and it was hard to get a good night's sleep. I have a busy job being a partner in a City law firm and it was difficult to fit in enough training around work commitments. I was helped enormously by nutritional advice provided by Dr Curran, including a vitamin infusion two weeks before the ride. I felt strong throughout and despite a lack of sleep stayed clear of injury and illness and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. We are now planning our next cycling adventure and a vitamin infusion will be a key part of my preparations.

As a fitness model and competitor, I approached Dr Curran during the run up to the 2014 WBFF European ProAm competition. My preparation involved an intensive training schedule with strict dietary demands. Trying to become competition-ready whilst working a full-time job lest me feeling drained at times. Dr Curran has a specialised knowledge of the physiological demands of intensive training and was able to recommend a course of vitamin infusions to boost my energy levels and support my immune system. I would recommend vitamin infusions to anybody who is serious about fitness and training as a part of their preparation, or post-event recovery.

At first I was apprehensive being squeamish where needles are concerned, Dr Nathan Curran assured me he never misses the vein and I’d only feel a scratch, which is true. The Vitamin Infusion itself was fast, painless and left me in a state of euphoria, well within 48 hours. It gave me the additional antioxidant support my body needs to cope with daily stresses and toxic load. This helped me fight fatigue, never missing a training session, and sustaining my fast paced lifestyle while staying healthy and looking my very best.
